![[HERO] Ladies Only Kickboxing: 5 Things You Should Know Before Your First Class](https://cdn.marblism.com/emdmsWXiH0f.webp)
So, you’ve been thinking about trying kickboxing. Perhaps you’ve seen the videos of women looking fierce and empowered, or maybe you’re just looking for a way to shake up your fitness routine that doesn’t involve staring at a treadmill wall for forty minutes. But then, that little voice of doubt creeps in: “What if I’m not fit enough?” “What if I’m the only one who doesn’t know what they’re doing?” “Is it going to be intimidating?”
First of all, let’s clear the air: those feelings are completely normal. Stepping into a martial arts studio for the first time can feel like a big leap. But at Premier Martial Arts, specifically in our Ladies Only Kickboxing sessions in Chelmsford and Witham, we’ve designed everything to be the exact opposite of “intimidating.”
Whether you’re 16 or 60, our classes are about empowerment, community, and having a blast while getting stronger. To help you quiet those pre-class nerves, we’ve put together the five essential things you should know before you step onto the mat for the first time.
1. You Don’t Need Any Prior Experience (Seriously!)
One of the biggest misconceptions about kickboxing is that you need to have a background in karate or be a secret athlete to join. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Most of the women who walk through our doors at Premier Martial Arts Chelmsford started exactly where you are: right at the beginning.
In your first class, we don’t expect you to know a jab from a cross or a front kick from a roundhouse. Our instructors, including experts like John Buckton and Josh Bridge, are specialists in breaking down complex movements into simple, manageable steps. We focus on building your foundation from the ground up.
You’ll start with the basics of how to stand and how to move your body safely. We foster an environment where “getting it wrong” is just part of the learning process. There is no judgment here: only support. Everyone in that room was a beginner once, and they all remember exactly how it felt on day one.

2. Your Stance is Your Foundation
Before you throw your first punch, you’ll learn the “Boxer’s Stance.” This is the most important part of your training because it provides the balance and power you need for everything else.
Think of your stance as your home base. You’ll typically stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with one foot slightly forward (usually your left foot if you’re right-handed). Your knees will have a slight bend: staying “springy”: and your hands will stay up to protect your face.
The beauty of our Ladies Only Kickboxing programme is that we take the time to ensure your technique is correct before we worry about speed or power. By focusing on the “why” behind the movement, you’ll find that you progress much faster and, more importantly, you’ll avoid the common injuries that happen when people try to do too much too soon. We prioritise form to help you build real, lasting muscle memory.
3. What to Wear and What to Bring
You don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe of professional gear before your first session at our Witham location. Here is a quick checklist of the essentials:
- Comfortable Clothing: Wear gym kit that allows you to move freely. Leggings or joggers and a breathable t-shirt or tank top are perfect. Avoid anything with too many zips or loose fabric that might get caught when you’re moving.
- Hydration: You are going to sweat! Bring a large bottle of water. Staying hydrated is key to maintaining your energy levels throughout the class.
- The Gear: For your first few sessions, you don’t need to worry about owning your own boxing gloves. However, once you decide to make kickboxing a regular part of your life, we recommend investing in a pair of 8–12 ounce gloves. They protect your knuckles and wrists during impact drills.
- Footwear: Most of our training is done barefoot or in specialized grip socks. This helps with balance and ensures you don’t slip on the mats.

4. It’s a Full-Body Workout for the Mind and Body
Kickboxing isn’t just about burning calories (though it is incredibly effective for that!). It’s a comprehensive approach to health. Many of our members join because they want to lose weight, and you can read more about why kickboxing is fantastic for weight loss here. But the benefits go so much deeper.
Physically, you’ll be engaging your core, toning your arms, and strengthening your legs. It’s also an amazing cardiovascular workout that helps protect your heart.
Mentally, the impact is even more significant. There is something incredibly cathartic about hitting a pair of focus mitts after a stressful day at the office or a long day managing the household. Kickboxing allows you to release pent-up tension in a safe, controlled environment. You’ll leave the class feeling lighter, calmer, and more capable of handling whatever the week throws at you. It’s not just “fitness”; it’s a form of active meditation that builds genuine confidence and self-defence awareness.
5. You’re Joining a Supportive “Sisterhood”
The “Ladies Only” aspect of our programme is something we are incredibly proud of. We’ve found that creating a space specifically for women allows for a unique type of camaraderie. There’s a special energy in the room when a group of women are all working toward their own goals, cheering each other on, and sharing a laugh between drills.
Our classes at Premier Martial Arts aren’t about competition; they’re about contribution. You’ll likely find yourself partnered up with someone who encourages you to push just a little bit further than you thought you could. This supportive community is often the reason our members keep coming back year after year.
We often see friendships blossom on the mats that extend far beyond the studio walls. Whether you’re coming to Chelmsford or Witham, you’re not just joining a gym: you’re joining a community that celebrates your wins, no matter how small they might seem.
